The most advanced machine tools require sophisticated feedback systems to obtain a constant processing accuracy which is a mandatory parameter for quality. Within this framework, the diameter measuring laser gauges have proven to be a necessity and a technologically qualifying component to boost the efficiency of most competitive NC lathes and centreless grinding machines.


Why Lasers?

The non-contact measuring technique, featuring remarkable flexibility and high gauging speed, has allowed industry to overcome the limitations dictated by touch-probes, which basically need to stop the part to perform the gauging. The use of laser light has made it possible to achieve the high level of accuracy which is today required to check tolerance ranges which are becoming tighter all the time.

The Applications

Laser gauges not only permit delicate off-line inspection to become simpler and faster, but they also enable on-line applications which are unthinkable with traditional contact systems. For example, multi-diameter through-feed measurement of ground parts or the on-line gauging of steel bars, providing real time and automatic machine control to recover the wearing of working tools.

Production that is free of scrap which results in outstanding savings in wasted material and skilled labour, is assured through 100% on-line inspection, immediate and automatic machine adjustment and the sorting of out-of tolerance parts. The results of the measurements are recorded by the system and can be easily down-loaded to external computers, which upon analysis can prove the product quality and the process capability.
